PermGem이 뭐지?
오늘 스프링 프레임워크를 공부하기 위해서 설정을 하다가 PermGen 영역 설정이라는 것을 보았다. PermGen이라는 말이 무슨 뜻인지 궁금해서 찾아보니 신조어라 없었다. 그래서 Perm과 Gen을 따로 검색해보았다.
먼저 Perm은 permanent의 약자로 뜻은 다음과 같다. dictionary.com의 해설을 참조하였다.
Also called permanent wave. A wave or curl that is set into the hair by the application of a speacial chemical preparation and that remains for a number of months.
설명을 읽다보니 preparation이란 단어의 뜻이 궁금해졌다. preparation의 뜻은 다음과 같다.
1. a proceeding, measure, or provision by which one prepares for something: preparations for a journey.
2. any proceeding, experience, or the like considered as a mode of preparing for the future.
3. an act of preparing.
4. the state of being prepared.

그래서 chemical preparation이 화학과정이라는 것을 알게 되었다.
Gen에 대한 설명은 다음과 같다.

: endrogen, hydrogen
그래서 PermGen은 영원히 존재하게끔 만드는 것이라서 컴퓨터공학에서는 영구 Data를 저장하는 장소이라는 것을 이해하게 되었다.
